Interview with niplar

What was the initial idea for Warsow?

Warsow was intended to be a fast paced FPS game, with stuff everyone could relate to, but still be innovative (Yes, that's what everyone says about their game). So, a couple of years ago, Blemish came up with the first design docs about how the game should be. He introduced the weak and strong ammo system and the walljumps. He also came up with how the maps could look like. And the maps he made for Warsow are still being played, so I guess he was right about it all :-).

Was the combination of so many aspects part of it from the beginning?

Yes, like I said the game was meant to be appealing to almost everyone.
  • Cartoons: Who doesn't like one single cartoon?
  • Boomsticks: Well, a bit of a tough one actually, because we're also seeing a lot of people from CS playing Warsow, and we all know they don't have rocketlaunchers in CS. But still, I think it's cool for everyone to go out there and hit someone with a rocket.
  • Walljumps: Don't you wanna be a superman? Walljumps give that extra bit of freedom players want.
  • Movement: we chose a movement that is pretty easy to learn, especially with the added 'Dash' button. Players can go really fast, in a short amount of time.
Does Warsow's popularity surprise you?

No and yes. It doesn't surprise me that there is a community warming up for it, I mean, it's a free game, and there's a lot of stuff in it that a lot of people can relate to. But it does surprise me that the community has picked it up so quickly, because, let's face it, there are prettier games out there than Warsow. But, as we have more and more updates, we hope the visual quality will progress as well (a quick cry for help: if you're interested in contributing to Warsow with art, please feel free to contact us!).

Is Warsow's rapid adoption into leagues affecting development?

Yes. When two highly skilled players take each other on, everything is stress tested: weapon balancing, the way we make our maps, item layouts, general understanding of the game... It does help us decide weather or not to make changes. It also forces us to make decisions about what to implement first: work on MultiView Demo's has started, lag-compensation has made it's way into Warsow 0.2, some stuff to help the admins run leagues as well... The list is endless.

If I may, is there a date of when Warsow 0.2 will be released?

The 0.2 release is scheduled to be released at the end of August. No particular date yet though. We've been testing new weapon settings, lag-compensation, and some new
maps. Hopefully the latter will make it into 0.2.

Thanks for the time niplar and good luck to the Warsow team
