Can one program do everything a gamer could wish for? Read on to find out. ![]() Chat PlayLinc got it right by choosing AIM as its chat client. In fact, that is how you log into the client. No need to add another messenger to an already crowded list of clients. Your AIM buddy list is not only intact but it can be used to game with your contacts. Buddies that are using the PlayLinc client get a P next to their name. Voice PlayLinc also allows you to setup your own voice server. It is a simple as dragging your buddies to the voice channel to give them an invite. All the basic controls you would expect to be there are present. The server is hosted on the SCI network. Server Browser To access the server browser you must go to the games menu and pick the game you want to play. It scans your PC for installed games and also lets you manually search for games to install. PlayLinc features the fastest game browser ever made, hands down. An unfiltered list of over 13,000 Counter-Strike servers was presented to me in less than five seconds. Details and filters are easy to access and use without using pop-ups or changing to a new menu. Double clicking a server will automatically launch the game and connect you to the server. Free Servers Yes, you read that right. PlayLinc allows you to create and control your own game servers for FREE. Just hit the Launch button and pick, host server. This will allow you to launch public or private servers with full admin control. You can select your server location; East, West and Dallas for now. When I tested the program, only eight of the most popular FPS games servers were supported. There are more games that you can host on the way. An advanced menu allows you to change map list as well. The only thing that would make this perfect would be the ability to upload custom server configs. Since it is still in beta, I will cross my fingers that it is coming. After getting the setting how I liked it, all I have to do is hit launch and I join my newly made server. I can invite buddies through PlayLinc to join the server, or people can join it just like you would any other server. Page:

hope they get around to beefing that up
loads of potential, but lots to be done
D: looks awesome.
does look very interesting
Mind you, I don't work for SCI-- I'm the Verizon Games guy, I run the product from the Verizon side. And I'm telling you I've seen the plan-- we will advertise, we will sell through the client, but we're not charging for servers.
Now, obviously, not ever game gets hosted servers-- but a lot do. Right now there are hosted servers for :
Counter Strike Source
Counter Strike (1.6 )
Halflife 2 Deathmatch
Americas Army
Battlefield 2
Quake 4
-- with more to come as they add support every day.
Will there be CAL cfgs? I'm betting eventually, yes.
What I want to see PlayLinc become is basically an engine to blow multiplayer gaming out to those who never quite grasped how to set up a public or private server.
Ever wonder why MMOG's have gotten so popular? I think a major part of it is that no-one has to worry about setting up a server-- you can live in an alternate universe very easily, with an embedded client. Multiplayer gaming needs a UI that's just as simple. Then we're not talking about whether I want to be in a fantasy world or an SF world-- anyone can easily launch any world they want as long as they have the game. You can live in BF2. I think PlayLinc will be an engine for people making more of their games than the games ever intended.
GAN is so freaking exciting I don't think we can imagine the extent of what people will use it for. A virtual lan means you can send your buddy in another state a new mod and be running it on a server, instantly. I expect modding to start to FLY.
Anyway, that's the vision. In the meantime, keep touring, and SCI'll keep tweaking.

Verizon is the best wireless network and their support definitely helps PlayLinc a lot. Free servers is gonna put a lot of people out of business. If they're decent quality.
And yeah that is a cool banner nicely done.
#28, if you honestly think it's cool-- hey, man, tell people. That's the only way we'll grow!
rcon stats showed: 64.03 fps :/
#41, hey, man, I appreciate the sentiment. Why try something new?
i'll still try it out. doesn't hurt.
