Almost 2 years after Half Life 2, Valve delivers their first try at episodic content. At this point in the game everyone should know the story, if not go out a pick up Half Life 2 because it is one of the greatest games ever made. The questions on everyone’s minds are, does this game live up the Half Life name and is it worth it.

Gameplay

Most of the game is based around working with Alyx to get out of City 17. I am not a big fan of the whole side kick thing. I rather have the game co-op than bother with a computer controlled friend. At least she was not useless and did not seem to get stuck along the way. Unlike her counter part in SiN, Alyx does help you out and Valve did a good job of making the most of the feature. Walking through a dark room, Alyx can only see zombies if your flashlight is on them. It can get intense as your flashlight’s power is starting to go out and zombies are pouring out of the wood work.

However, Alyx is not with you the whole time. There are many times you have to go off on your own to complete objectives. In some ways Episode One is almost a puzzle game with some action mixed in. None of the puzzles are too hard, but I found them rewarding when I figured them out. Once again, Valve uses the physics engine to enhance this experience, so it is not a matter of just jumping from platform to platform but moving a barrel, or breaking an object to get through a section.

There is not much new as far as general gameplay. There are Zombine, which are combine soldiers that have been turned to zombies. Other than that, it is mostly the same group of weapons and bad guys. The action is varied through the different sections so the game continues at a good pace without being too repetitive. I have realized that I really dislike how the machine guns fire in Half Life at all. The fake recoil is a bit annoying. I rather have control over it. It is one of the things SiN (or even CS) does better than Half Life 2. At least the gravity gun is still entertaining, and I found myself using it as much as possible in fights.

Graphics / Performance

The Source engine has gone through many updates over the last two years. Not only does this game look better than Half Life 2 when it first came out, but it runs a lot better too. I did not have to turn down the graphics settings at all and the game ran flawlessly. The models have all been improved as well, with more detail and smoothness to them.

Sound

The sound has received some improvements as well. Depending where you are firing, your weapon’s sound differs in a realistic way. Even the enemy sounds have been enhanced to add a bit more variety to their catalog.

Conclusion & Ratings

Overall, the game was a lot of fun and I enjoyed every minute of it. I have been debating the “Is it worth twenty bucks for a four hour game?” question over the last twenty four hours. In one way, it included excellent story telling and gameplay throughout the whole game. On the other hand, it was over pretty damn fast. Then again, if you look at games like Rainbow Six Lockdown for $50 and Ubersoldier for $30, both which were not even enjoyable for one hour, let alone all ten. Right now, you can pick up SiN and HL2 Episode One for $40 dollars, and you will get about nine hours of solid gameplay. Looking at it that way, it does not seem like that bad of a value at all.

It's awesome. The easier way to look at the price/length is that it's going to be 3 episodes to complete a story arc and if all of them are 4-5 hours then you'll be paying 60 bucks for a 12-15 hour game which is the length of most shooters at the current price of 360 games.

$16 would be a fair price imo, not 20. I beat it in 3-4 hours.

Also the puzzles that valve puts into the games are made for 8 year olds. You dont even have to think, they are stupid.

I agree with the review but like i said, please get some harder puzzles. They all involve manipulating ramps to get around a problem.

It's not an adventure game where all you do is solve puzzles, it's a first person shooter. Complex puzzles would kill gameplay for sooo many people if they did it. As for the price, pre-ordering makes it $18, and if $4 is the difference between buying it and not, just stuff that extra box of hot pockets back in the freezer and suck it up.

I found it to be totally worth my money. I pre-ordered so I got a small discount. Also I'm playing through it a second time immediately after I finished it, this time with audio commentary on and the difficulty on hard. If you play it this way it's easily 8 hours fun.

not saying its a game only about solving puzzles, just make them more challenging or dont have them in there at all. The puzzles are just part of the game, they're not everywhere. Having harder puzzles wouldnt stop the flow of the game. Just make them a little more rewarding to beat. As for 16 dollars over 20 dollars sure it makes a difference. These are going to be episodes after you buy all of them together 4 dollars per episode will make a big difference. Thats like saying you dont want change everytime you buy something you can have the mindset of "oh its only 4 dollars".

#22 What were you expecting to achieve from HL2, a full on orgasm? I'm sorry but if you actually played through the game and could honestly tell me you didn't enjoy it, you need to find yourself a new hobby.

This was a great game, and to end all of the "Too short" bitching..

HL2 Episode 1: $20, 5 hours of interactive story telling
An average DVD: $20 , 2 hours or less of noninteractive story telling.

What else is there to say

It was a pretty good short ride. I found that they really tried to jampack as much puzzles/action/HDR and new shaders/new gameplay (alyx covering your butt with the sniper rifle) into as few levels as possible. Unlike HL2 where there were a lot of just mindless walking around, EP1 was very condensed, allowing maximum gameplay in a short amount of time. Though my aging comp (x800+3.3ghz p4) never managed to get anything higher than 30-50fps in ANY of the levels (probably due to the nonstop action), i can appreciate the fact that i can still play this game with everything maxed out and not lag into the low 20s and 10s like i had with HL2 (very unpolished vs EP1). Plus with all the new effects and shaders, im suprised that i even got such a smooth CONSISTENT fps throughout the whole thing. 8/10.

No comments on the short span of the episode in the review?

While I dont mind the 20$, here is my thoughts.

If we paying 20$ for 4 hours of gamplay, times 3 episodes, thats 60$ for 12 hours of gameplay, which was supposed to the aftermath expansion. When have us gamers EVER paid 60$ for any expansion pack?

It was fun, and I enjoyed it. though im hoping valve does some promo when you buy all or three or something for a discount on the last one. Because if those numbers add up right, it seems a bit expensive.

plus valve ruined my favourite game CS , basically im done with valve ill never buy anything off them again.

p.s yes i was expecting multiple orgasms because of the 5 year hype which surrounded the thing. plus the 12 month delay on the release date.

#31 What are you talking about the main point of the review is it worth the money for such a short game.

The movie can be found in your steam folder, episoides folder , media I think. It is in there if you have beat the game. I am sure someone can do the full path I dont have it installed here.

and one thing, can someone tell me, is this STAND ALONE game? Or jsut addon to HL2 (ie. must have hl2 to play this game) .. of course i ahve hl2, just simply wondering

good but not worth $20 imo. it's said to be released instead of HL3 as 4 episodes. 4 x 20 = $80 for one game. why not make it fair at 4 x 10 = $40. i'd pay no more than 10 bucks for the individual episodes.

cs 1.6 = 10 AUS dollars = 1000000000000000000000000 + hours of fun

hl2 ep 1 = 20 AUS dollars = maybe 10 hours of gameplay if u play it twice.

average movie = 20 AUS dollars = 2.5 hours of interestingness
