EXE Home: Godfather Review

Grand Theft Godfather. Those three words sum up this game about as well as it can be summed up. While the game is fun, it is beyond indebted to Rockstar's classics. This game is an indentured servant to the GTA series. Is it an offer you can refuse? Read on to find out...

Minimum System Requirements
1.4 Ghz Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor
256 MB RAM
2x or faster DVD Drive
5 GB of free space
DirectX 9.0c compatible video card
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Video card must have 64 MB or more memory and contain one of these T&L capable chipsets:
ATI Radeon 8500 or greater; NVIDIA GeForce 3 or greater, except GeForce4 MX

Test System
3.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4
2 GB RAM
16x DVD Drive
GeForce 6800GT 256 MB PCI-E
Onboard Realtek AC'97

Installation

The game asked me to read a license agreement that it did not show. There was a blank box with a yes or no button. It told me to install DirectX 9.0c, which is installed, and would not install any further, even after I “installed” DirectX 9.0c again. Luckily, I remembered a trick that I had to use to get certain 9.0c games installed, and that trick was to change the compatibility mode of the installer to Windows 2000. There should be no reason we have to jump through this many hoops to get a game installed.

Once the game installed and booted up, I was treated to the Paramount logo and the familiar strains of The Godfather theme, beginning with the trumpets. Very cool. I started a new game, and the first thing you do is make your mobster, using EA's "MobFace" sliders. I don't think it's as extreme as the level of customization as in EA's other games, as I had a hard time making a guy who didn't look tough. Still, there are a multitude of clothing options that you can buy later, once you get some cash together, to make yourself look like less of a street hood and more like the made man you are.

When you look at the characters, the game looks great. You see Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Abe Vigoda and James Caan throughout the game, as your mobster moves up the ranks of the Corleone family. Unfortunately, Al Pacino didn't allow the developers to use his likeness or voice for the game, so Michael is some generic guy. EA handled it rather well, but as someone who hates recasting, it's really a shame they couldn't get him onboard.

Graphics

The problem with the graphics comes once you get about halfway through the game. Most of the locations are carbon copies of each other. You have about 5 or 6 basic locations, and the only ones that receive any customization at all are the ones that play a part in the story. There might be two different versions of a certain place, but that's it. Every bakery shaped a certain way will have the same basement, filled with counterfeit money printing presses, even if there is no counterfeit operation running in the basement! Repetition is really the story of this game.

Sound

The sound is nothing to write home about. The voice acting from the main characters is, well, the main characters. It's essentially the same performance they gave in the movie. As for everything else, they have the Godfather music playing, generally well-acted generic voice overs, pretty authentic sounding guns, but that's about it. There are some funny moments when a random passer-by on the sidewalk will say something like “That thug you killed was a f---ing asshole,” but later on in the game, you get the same handful of fearful or respectful responses from everyone, and you'll have heard the few different themes so many times you wish you could turn them off—but you can't. Yes, that's right, there are NO options for the sound.

I love the godfather movies It is such a shame they didnt spend more time on this game. I guess getting the actors alone cost what most games do.
Its a piece of cake to bake a pretty cake.

this game is bad ass...im playing it now and if you like GTA San Andreas, you'll like this game too...dont care what the review has to say lol

good review, the only thing that was off was when you mentioned that it was crazy for a gun to be priced $150,000 in the 1940's. I dont think they were trying to replicate the exact gun price in real life, just like bribing a fbi agent cost's $3000. They were just making it hard to get.
hi

3000 to bribe an FBI agent sounds right, actually...it's probably not even enough for an FBI agent...maybe a few uniforms..but an fbi agent..lol

#19: The gun was $500,000. A half million dollars. $3,000 to bribe an FBI agent does sound about right, but when you're talking about a half-million dollars for one gun, $450k for another, it's clear they're just stretching you out as far as you can. You'd have to sit around for like 2 "weeks" after taking over all of New York to get both of them.
$150,000 for an apartment is about right too.

I completed it on PS2 and thought it was really good. The cars get abit boring though and I think the reason the guns are ridiculously expensive are because it makes the game ALOT easier with them. When I got that gold magnum thing it seemed alot easier o_O but the last damn mission was SO annoying, I kept dying in the celler trying to plant the bomb and ended up buying a safe house just for the ammo I needed :/

The C+ is not an average. It's an overall score for the game. I was torn between giving it a B- and a C+, but I think the rating is right.

it should be rated as a D- with a little note from your teacher saying "must try harder"

they had a peach of a licence, coupled with a wealth of other games (GTA/mafia) which they could take inspiration from and they have done the bear minimum!

mafia was 10 times the game this is and GTA would have you playing the game over and over, GF has no replay value at all. Mafia had this replay value in spadefuls!!!

GTA = A*
Mafia = A/B+
GF = D-

Can't say fairer than that at the end of the day.

I'd like to get confirmation as to whether the reviewer has played Mafia? Because there is no comparision to that game in the review and it is of the same ilk.

the godfather game is crapt it was obviously rushed and not a good quality game. if you want to play a GTA style mobster game... play mafia... trust me.

another thing is how limited the world is in godfather. you can only really go through the main streets to get from city to city and once in the city they are only like 5 blocks by 5 blocks... the mafia world was soo much bigger and even had areas away from the city in rural areas. its sad how mafia has been out for like what 4 or 5 years? and its still 10x's better than this crapt.

oh and i forgot to add that the controls are horid they could have done soo many things to simplify them. I also found that my mouse movements were very strange in the game, as if it forced negative mouse acceleration.
